For a dig box, would "fuzzy balls" or sponge balls be okay to use? The come in a variety of sizes as well. So I could get ones that wouldn't be swallowed.

I know a lot of people use fleece strips, but I want other options as well. Dirt/sand would be fun, but it can get stuck in a boys, boy parts, so I won't use that.

I've heard before that the sponge balls aren't safe because sometimes the hedgies will chomp down on them and their teeth sink in and then get stuck. From what I remember of the fuzz balls they seem like pieces could be pulled off or toe nails snugged. Fleece strips would work really good for digging :) Sorry I don't have more suggestions.

I recommend staying away from sponge balls. I bought some many years ago and I thought they were a great idea at the time as they were soft and wouldn't make any noise. And they worked fine for the hedgehog I originally purchased them for as he liked to push them around in his cage with his nose. Then came along a hedgehog that liked to pick items up and pack them around. Which was fine at first as the sponge balls were soft and she could easily pick them up without hurting her teeth. However I started to find missing pieces, those balls went into the trash immediately. No need to risk them causing a GI impaction.

I make small cloth balls and cubes for my hedgehogs. I make them out of flannel or fleece. I also have a couple of larger ones that go into my hedgehogs cuddle cups and they use them as cuddle buddies. The cloth items I love. They are quiet, the hedgehogs can carry them without hurting their teeth and they can use them as cuddle buddies.
