Wood waterproofing

Hi everyone, I'm making my girl a new and bigger cage, her actual cage is essentially a c and c cage, but instead of coroplast I've used plexiglass. I'm making a shelving unit out of wood to put the cage in. Don't worry it's open on all four sides and lots of room above the cage so she will have lots of ventilation. I'm actually looking for a waterproof paint finish for the shelf. She will not have contact with the wood, I'm just looking to protect the wood itself. I already have a stain for the wood (hedgehog friendly) so I'm really just looking for a clear finish. I'm having a hard time findin a finish as I'm in Canada and everything I've found is in the US or U.K. Any one have any ideas on what I can use?

Unfortunately, most of what's available to us Canadians is either pricey, or comes in a huge bucket. I use this: https://www.homedepot.ca/en/home/p....ng-wood-stain-tint-base-355-l.1000108510.html for my cages normally, or I glue in a layer of this: http://www.walmart.ca/en/ip/duck-br...ear-laminate/6000016952357?rrid=richrelevance depending on who's going to be in the cage. If it's just for the shelf, the stain would be the prettier choice, but you'd have to buy a big can of it.

Hopefully that helps a bit!

Thanks for the reply!!

Ditto about everything in canada being overpriced or only available in large quantities, oh the struggles!
I already have a stain for the cabinet, its a really pretty grey stain so I want to keep it that. The laminate is a nice solution, I didn't even think about that, I am looking for a non-glossy solution (I am picky I know) but maybe I will just line the insides of the cabinet where it is most likely to get sprayed by the wheel.

I was also shown these two finishes and wanted some opinions whether they were safe or not:
Although it is quite a large amount, this one is a food-grade finish, zero-VOC, solvent free, and have no heavy metal driers: http://www.triedandtruewoodfinish.com/products/original-wood-finish/

This one is made for pet cages, is also zero-Voc, non-toxic and has no odour, I would have to ship it from the US though, havent looked at the cost of that yet: http://www.ecospaints.net/ecos-eggshell-pet-dwellings-paint.html

I was also looking to paint the metals bars of the cubes in her c and c cage, I've seen some people use rustoleum for bird cages (who have VERY sensitive respiratory systems), anyone have any experience with that?

Thanks
