You just have to leave it in the cage. He has to decide to use it and figure it out on his own. Some hedgehog's take a long time to figure it out but when they do they love it. :D

Some hedgehogs will never use a wheel; some just take some time to figure it out. Leave the wheel in the cage, and give him time to figure out that's what it's for. Then hopefully you'll wake up to a poopy wheel one morning.

As HedgiePets asked, what kind of wheel is it? Also, what size is it? If it's too small for him (wheels should be 12"+ in diameter), he won't want to run on it because of being cramped. With a proper wheel, most hedgies are on within a week or two.

In the meantime, continue playtime as usual so he gets exercise that way. Watch his food intake by checking the fat %s on the food (10-15% fat is ideal for most hedgies, you may want to consider switching to a lower fat kibble--more on the 10% side--if he chooses not to wheel at all) and by watching how many mealworms/treats he gets a night. And hope for the best. Hopefully he'll start wheeling soon.

its one of the silent solid plastic ones, i dont know the name of the brand, hes started sniffing it lately which is good because before he didnt pay it any attention so maybe hes getting there. the wheel is a little smaller then 12" but hes still pretty small (only about 6 weeks old) so i figured a smaller wheel would be ok at first until he grew out of it (we had the wheel from my girlfriends rat, now deceased) so buying another one wouldnt be a problem. please correct me if im wrong.

It might be too small, or could it possibly still smell like the rat? If it smells odd to him that might be it.
