Yes, apparently people have found things in YN. I have never found any metal but have seen the blue and red pieces that are supposedly plastic. My Teasel use to decorate his igloo with his YN. T had a loft in his cage where his igloo was and he would carry the YN up to his igloo and line it up end for end all around the inside edge of his igloo. Sometimes he would have 4 rows of neatly placed YN. When I started noticing the same red and blue pieces in his poop that were in the YN, I quit using it. I'm not sure if the YN on it's own would cause impaction but the plastic pieces certainly could.

One of the problems with Carefresh is it ends up in food dishes easier than Yesterdays News. People use Carefresh as bedding and if it gets in the dish, the animal can eat it by mistake. Rarely do people use YN as a bedding because it is really not an ideal bedding as it is hard to walk on and not comfortable to sleep on. Because of this, there isn't as much risk of the hedgehog accidentally eating it so unless they do on purpose it isn't as much of a problem.

We've never seen anything in our YN bags, but I'll be sure to double check the next bag!

One of our hedgies would attempt eating it, but he couldn't get very far due to the coating on each of the pieces and lost interest very quickly.

That's a great observation! I also think the coating on it would make it difficult for it to soak up as much water as Carefresh. I've never noticed any of the pieces expand after being wet.. but then again, I never really grabbed a ruler to measure.

Most people who use yesterday's news usually check for plastic pieces before putting it in to the cage. As long as you sort through the bit you are going to use and pick out any pieces that shouldn't be there (which are usually really obvious), there should not be any problems.

im scared that there might be something els that got into the bag like chemicals. i wouldnt risk it.
I am not trying to fight with you at all, I'm just honestly curious why the opinions of one product have you convinced you shouldn't use it, and yet when people tried to say that cat litter was not a good alternative, you didn't care? You seem very honestly worried about Bessie's health, so why are you willing to risk one product and not the other? If you'd rather not answer, that's fine to, I'm just curious!

I use plain old clay litter. Non clumping, Non fragranced plain old clay. But I will let you in on a secret.....EVERYTHING is chemicals.... Everything! From the foods you and your hedgie eats to the wastes you produce, The air you breath to the ground, floors, steps you walk on.

eek that is a huge signature XD Also, the website isn't working. (much like mine isn't at the moment)

I just avoid cat litters. QL and Clark just get fleece and paper towels. No respiratory issues or impaction or anything like that.

I know of a hedgehog who did have litter (tidy cats actually) stuck in his penile shaft. I also heard of another that had it clumped around her anus which ended up causing a blockage. I'm not sure if the latter of the two was tidy cats, but it was non-clumping and tidy cats non-clumping is pretty much the same as any other brand non-clumping. I love tidy cats and use it on ALL of my CATS so I'm not trying to bash the company, I simply would not recommend it for hedgehogs just as I will not recommend people to use clumping on young kittens because there are (deadly) risks though they are not overabundantly common. Why take an unnecessary risk?

Also, I use paper towels after the baby is somewhat litter trained or going on wheel/in wheel litter box.
I will put carefresh in the box at first but again, it's only in the litter box and very far away from the food. I haven't had any problems with eating it. I always feel bad taking it out because all of my hedgies have LOVED rolling in it when I first put it in :-(
