I was hoping to get a list going of conditions that cause weight loss as I am having quite the frustrations with my Chloe who is now down to 455g from the 480g she was only 2 weeks ago (she used to be 550g before getting a URI about a month ago, which is now 100% cleared up) and still dropping weight. I've run a fecal, she's on straight kitten food (all her food is 18-20% fat) + lots of bugs + meat (wet cat food/wellness healthy indulgences/baby food) Her appetite is great, 30-35 kibble per night, which is more than she ate before the URI, her wheeling is normal, she does runs more with her new Carolina Storm Wheel (but the weight loss started before I got it and plus, shouldn't the higher fat food help balance the increased exercise out?) and otherwise she is 100% healthy.

The next step with my vet is to run x-rays and bloodwork but as these are quite costly and also risky I was hoping to maybe brainstorm what the heck could be causing this before taking her in as I think going in with some ideas of what it could be might be helpful, as my vet (who's otherwise awesome) isn't too sure what it could be.

Any ideas?

I was wondering...can hedgehogs have thyroid issues? Is it possible she has hyperthyroidism? Can that even been treated in hedgehogs?

Yes they can have thyroid as well as diabetes. They can check for diabetes with a simple urine test or if you know anyone who has a glucometer, cut a nail to short and then use the glucometer. I will mention that a urine test at the vet can give a false positive as they are stressed. When Ivy was sick, her urine was off the chart at the vets but then was fine with the glucometer.

Thanks Nancy :)

I will see if I can track down a glucometer to test for diabetes, I'm pretty sure the clinic I work at has one for cats and dogs so I'll ask them if I
can use it. I'll have to run bloodwork to check her thyroid too. I'm definitely thinking it could be diabetes or hyperthyroidism at this point.

If it were diabetes, would she need daily shots of
insulin the way cats and dogs do?

If you're going to have blood work done anyway, have it also tested for diabetes. That is the most accurate. I seem to recall there is someone on the Welfare list who has or had a diabetic hedgehog. Perhaps ask on there. At the time it was thought that our Ivy (rescue) had diabetes, my vet had not had a case in hedgehogs and didn't know what exactly to do. .

Thanks for the heads up, I will definitely just run a full blood panel then to test for diabetes, thyroid and everything else. I'll check out the Welfare list too, thanks :D

I'm not sure if my vet will know what to do either. Chloe's still very young (just turned a year) and seems happy and healthy otherwise so hopefully there's something that can be done.

I can't offer advice of any kind, but I hope you guys figure out what's going on with Chloe! You're a great hedgiemomma to all of your hedgehogs, and it's wonderful to see how much you care about them and how hard you try to keep them all healthy and happy. I'm sure they all appreciate it lots! :)

I'd be interested to hear the outcome of the blood work, too. If Emmy doesn't stop losing weight I'll have to do the same thing. Keep us posted and best of luck!
