Hi, so I’ve been wondering, what’s the normal weight by month in African Pygmy hedgehogs? I want to know if Kiwi is getting a bit chubby and I have to start putting her on a diet. She’s 0.5kg at 2 months old.

500g is quite big - massive, honestly, for a 2 month old. Some hedgehogs are naturally larger though so what is normal for one hedgehog could be overweight for another. Have you got a photo of her? My boy is 480g, but he’s 1.5 years old and fully grown. Are you positive your scales is accurate? And she’s definitely only 8 weeks old? Is there a possibility she is older? My guy was 175g at 6 weeks. So this is why I’m doubtful.
My Hedgie (Frank) was four pounds when he was born. But his mom was a big gal.

We fed her less kibble and she’s lost weight as of right now and she’s been running on the wheel more. Also her mom was pretty large and so were her siblings, she’s just, big lol.

Are you sure you weighed her properly? She doesn’t look 500g at all. I’d check your scales are calibrated properly. Could be an illusion of the picture, but she looks tiny and I don’t even think it’s possible for an 8 week old to be that big - they are Pygmy hedgehogs after all haha.

I also would not restrict her kibble. She’s not overweight, I think there’s just a problem with your scales weighing her wrong.

Nope my scale is fine I asked the breeder and they said the mom was around her weight around her age I’m guessing it’s from genetics
Have you got a picture of her next to something for reference? Or like on the scales?
She just looks so small I can’t imagine that she’s bigger than my guy haha, hence why I’m wondering if somethings off. Again, could be the pic, but I’ve never heard of a 500g 8 week old Pygmy lol
