water bowl problems

every so often, usually once or twice a week, my hedgie some how manages to empty his water bowl.

I have no idea how he's doing this, as the the bowl is in the exact same spot as I have placed it, and its not upside down/on its edge or anything. Its a ceramic bowl, so its not exactly light weight either.

the problem being (especially when i have work, as I work nights) I don't know at what point he's emptying it, so therefore don't know how much he drinks. He's still pooping/weeing and doing all his usual activities.

should I be concerned about dehydration? And is there a way i can stop this happening?

Can you try siliconing or gluing a small kitchen backsplash tile to the bottom of the dish? That will stop him from tipping it and then flipping it back over if that's what he's doing. Is it possible he's drinking all of it? How much does it hold?

I hadn't thought of that but imagine I could do that if necessary.

Well I have just measured how much its holds, and its about 150ml. I cant imagine he's drinking that much?! Also, the bedding round the bowl is always completely soaking when the bowl has been emptied. He is litter trained and only wees on his tray. When the bowl is emptied completely is the only time any of the rest of the beddng gets wet, and its only around the bowl. (so I have assumed its not wee)

Strange. I suppose he could be flipping it and then putting it back. Or he could be playing in it and making a mess that way. Or even dunking his food in it. Do you find bits of food in the bowl? I doubt he's drinking all of it. Definitely a mystery. I don't suppose you have a small webcam or video camera you could hook up over his cage?

It is pretty strange. I suppose he could be playing with it, just weird that the bowl never appears to have moved. No, never see food or crumbs or anything in the bowl either.
Uhm, I'm not sure if I do own anything like that really to film him, would be interesting to see what he does though.
The fact he some how empties the bowl, doesn't matter to me (its a slight annoyance, to have to change this bedding, but hey ho :p) I was more concerned about him not getting enough water and possible dehydration.

If you were seeing crumbs at least you'd know he was getting some fluid. Hmm.

I say try the tile, just in case the weight of his head in the bowl is causing it to tip when he tries to get a drink. I had a dog bowl in one of my snake enclosures for water once and he liked to sit on the rim to drink. The bowl would tip when he leaned in and get the floor all wet. Took me ages to figure it out, and he wasn't drinking well because every time he tried he'd spook himself .

Another option to test is a cheap, short reptile bowl with a large footprint. I find those are pretty sturdy. The bigger the base, the better.

My leopard gecko has this one, and Finn's food bowl is similar

I actually have a lot of spare reptile bowls like that already. I'll thoroughly disinfect one and clean it (cant remember which ones I have used in my reptile enclosures) and then try that out. Hopefully that will solve the problem. Thanks :)

My hedgie has done this a couple of times! I have woken up to an empty water bowl and her t-shirts soaking wet!

We found out it was because she was dunking the t-shirts into her water bowl, especially at the sleeves of the t-shirt. So now I always put the sleeves away from her water bowl. Since I have done this, it hasn't happened again (hopefully I don't jinx myself).

Also, we have a camera set up, so I know that she uses her nose to slightly knock her ceramic bowl, but luckily whenever she does this, the water somehow does not mess!

Update:
tried using a shallow reptile bowl, still somehow managed to empty it :s think I went to shallow.
so I used a slightly deeper reptile bowl, also I moved it to a different spot in the cage. So far haven't had any problems, so I assuming he decided he didn't want it there anymore for whatever reason.
hopefully, from now on should have no further problems :)
