Good afternoon. When I get my hedgie I plan to have fleece liners for him because I already have some fleece, and it is easily and cheaply obtainable from craft stores and because it's easy to clean-- just chuck it into the washer.

It just occurred to me that I should ask about detergents, and if there is anything I should avoid. The rinse cycle should rinse out any extra laundry detergent, so that shouldn't be a problem. If one uses a dryer, then they shouldn't use scented fabric softener-- or any at all? I usually air dry my laundry--is there any reason why I should not do this for hedgie liners? I'm trying to think of things that could upset their noses... maybe drying them inside instead of outside so that outdoor pollen and dust can't get on them?

Please let me know if I've overlooked anything (though, it's far more likely that I've over-thought all of this!) Thanks.

i only use unsented detergents for my little girl, and i dont use any fabric softer's or dryer sheets as it makes the fleece/fabric less obsorbent, and i put in like a half cup of vinager depending on my load, it helps with smell i dont know how hang drying would work, i have never tried it, i just chuck it in the dryer and call it done. lol

Vortex-- the vinegar helps with what smell, the hedgie poo smell? Sorry to seem obtuse; I just want to be clear. I won't have my hedgie for a few months, and I just want to be as prepared as possible.

I've always rinsed my liners out in the tub first, then tossed them in with the rest of the wash (detergent is free of any scent or dye) and hung to dry. Perhaps I'm lucky, but I've never had a smell issue with them that needed anything beyond regular detergent... no vinegar here.

I've also never used vinegar on my liners. I used scented detergent the first time I washed them, and they didn't seem to bug her too much since they sat in my room for several days before one of them got switched into her cage, so they smelled more like my room, I think. But before the second (most recent) washing that I did, I went and bought some scentless, dyeless detergent and used that instead. I don't use any softener or dryer sheets, but I do dry them in the dryer rather than hanging out to dry.

yes, the vinegar is for the poo and pee smell, but my hedgie is also still a baby so her poopy is a little more potent them normal :lol: i sometimes also use a double rinse, and i also suggest running a "empty" rinse after you do hedgie landry. to make sure you wash out and left over poo and/or quills. its never fun to do your own landry after hedgies and discover a quill in your undies :lol: lol
