I was researching the whole live feeding and insect stuff on here and other websites and came across this supplement. Apparently the insects lack sufficient calcium and this additive (along with proper daylight bulb - UV) help to counter the negative effects regarding growth and bone deficiency.

Should this be "sprinkled" on hedgie food?

I get my little boy next weekend and I want to make sure that I have absolutely everything in house before he comes home. Since he will be newly weaned from mom, I want to make sure that the growing baby has the proper nutrition.

I've purchased a bag of hedgehog specific food - from exotic nutrition - to be mixed with blue buffalo cat food. I plan to add some crickets and meal worms to his diet as well. I'll try introducing vegetables too.

So should the aforementioned list of food be enough or should I consider dietary supplements such as this in addition to what I'm already starting off with?

Thank you for your replies.

Is the food you plan to give him the same as the breeder? If not, get some of the food that the breeder uses and make sure you transition to the new foods slowly, like over the course of a few weeks.

You can get the proper nutrients just from the kibble (or mixing a few different kinds of kibble), so you shouldn't actually need to supplement his diet. Treats are fine, of course. Here are a couple good threads that can help you put together his diet:

And if you haven't yet, take a look through this guide. It's incredibly helpful: http://www.westcoasthedgehogs.com/files/hedgehogbook/index.html :)
