Another hedgehog died last night after being treated with Tea Tree oil for suspected mites and/or ringworm.
Her poor owner had researched and found tea tree oil recommended on numerous websites both US and Europeon, as a natural way to treat mites and fungal infections.
Based on what she read on the websites she decided to use it on her girls.
Yesterday morning the smallest girl was lethargic and barely able to move. She was rushed to the vet who said there was nothing that could be done but to push fluids and hope for the best. The little one died last night.
I did a very quick search on tea tree oil and found many sites recommending it for use on hedgehogs. If any of you see a site recommending tea tree oil or shampoo, please contact the owner and have that dangerous information removed.
TEA TREE OIL, Shampoo, or anything with Tea Tree in it IS TOXIC. It is NOT safe to use on animals.
