Hello, i am Gianni and I am italian.
Few weeks ago we bring at home our WabiSabi and from the first moment it started to scratch. Initially it doesn’t shows any signs of illness. We thinked he was changing its squills. The only signs was like an orange mud that caver part of same of its squills
1) picture of first days (29/08/21)

2) 3 weeks later it start to show this issue (22/09/21) and we bring it to the vet

Unfortunatelly mi gf stay with Wabi to the vet due tho covid restriction but the Vet doesn’t help us with the issue. He doesn’t know how and what to feed him (give him what it likes to eat), poo and ears controls showed no problems. The vet look at his skin with magnifying glass and the controll show not parasites. Quill show like an orange mud that was identified like Seborrhea issue.
Vet diagnosis was: the problems can be:
-low humidity in the cage
-dry skin
-diet problems
The solution give us was: principally try to fed with canned food with moisture and give him for 20 days 1/2 omega pet perle at day

Sameone with experience with this problem? I am searching for solutions from more expert keepers at least to give him a safest period of illness before bring him again to the vet.
I am new in the world of hedgehog so you need to tell me all possibily that i can try like a bath, dry bath(don t know what is), oils or same preventive antiparasites

Is she losing quills and fur? Did your vet test for a fungal or bacterial infection? If not, ask your vet to do a scraping to take a sample of the skin and test for that and I'd have a skin scraping tested for mites again.

Is possible that the vet at the first visit told us it's better to don't do scraping test immidiately?
He told us to buy this supplement and try it for 20 days cause the problem could be the diet. If this therapy doesn't work he prescrived us a atiparassites (that now i have applied this week). It happen that during the cleaning routin i picked his woodhome and i see a little animal to run away so we dicide tu proceed with the therapy. Are passed just few days but it look bit better but i am not sure so i will wait another week to controll the situation and if it will go better, or if it will go worst i will take him to the vet for scraping test

Btw no, he is not losing any squills or fur, at least not so much to suggest samething

My goodness !! This looks fungal (although you never really know) and I actually can’t believe your vet didn’t test for anything right off the get go and tried to up sell you on a probably useless supplement!! Go back to your vet immediately … have him do a skin scrape AND fungal culture. Also treat for mites as a precaution because there is a certain type that is extremely hard to detect. Ask for Revolution for the possible mites and wait for the culture to come back.
Under NO circumstance should you allow the vet to administer Ivermectin for mites, it can be deadly to the hog . Wait for the results of the scrape and culture and in the meantime as well , I’d get him to also give you some anti bacterial/ anti fungal soap. Bathe your hedgy for a few days and see if it brings him any relief. There is no harm in this. This poor guy !!!!

It’s also possible he could be allergic to bedding … try switching it to something else ! Wood can be drying . I would say fleece or paper . Make sure you freeze your bedding for 48 hours to get rid of any potential mites that are infesting it !

These are very sensitive animals and things can go south FAST! Don’t wait 20 days !

nutrition wise , make sure you’re feeding him a healthy cat kibble that has a protein percentage of 30-33 and fat percentage of about 15. Any higher and overtime your hedgehog can develop liver issues, as their bodies cannot process over certain amounts of fat and protein

Thank you all for the replies. Before receiving them i startet to set up his cage into a quarantene cage (want to bring him to vet the next day) with just essential all of paper except the sand in a plastic box.
When i got up his old wood house and check it i saw a little white animal. (I am a biology student and i am an exotic keeper). I did same researches and i speculated 2 options: a) flues b) reticuluformes nymph
I put the house in a plastic bag and brought it to the vet, 10 minutes of research and found nothing, showed him wabi’s photos. Told me to proceed with the general pesticide previously prescribed and to bring the hedgehog in the next days.
I ordered it (stronghold for cats and dogs) and the day after i gave it to him. (Btw durig these days he was starting to look a bit better). In two days he had visibly improved so i decided to don’ t bring him to the vet.

Yesterday in a facebook group about Atelerix a. I saw same photos of an hedgehog with a similar disease and a lot of people comment with “mange disease”.
I say that cause in the end we don’t know exaclty what was his disease. I will bring him to the vet at the end of the therapy.

Ah!!! So it was mites! That would have definitely been in my list of guesses. Sometimes it’s incredibly hard to tell and SOMETIMES, the mites can be too small to even see on a skin scrape. I’m so glad he’s better!!! Yay!!
