Second Ode to The Hedgehog (on Groundhog Day)

There once was a hedgehog from Nantucket,

Into his body, his head he would tuck it.

On each Groundhog Day,

To the rodent, he'd say,

Take your shadow and winter and...leave me alone.

Did you know that groundhog day derives from the hedgehog originally? The Romans used the hedgehog to detect spring, long before Punxaturny Phil (I'm not American and too lazy to Google so my spelling there might be a little off lol).

Groundhogs are native to North America, whereas hedgehogs are found in Europe, Africa, and Asia, so when settlers came to the New World, they made the substitute.
