Hey everyone
Yesterday I was with my boyfriend cleaning the hedgehogs and after giving Huff a bath, i noticed this wound on her back. When i looked at it i think i saw a quill that looked like it could have come from this area but i cant be sure. does anyone know how this could be caused or if it looks familiar to anyone? she does seem to scratch when she wakes up but this was literally in the middle of her back so im not sure if that could be the cause.

any help would be appreciated! we can take her to a vet if needed but i just wanted to see if anyone has seen this before

That is unusual. Seems like there should be a quill there, but instead, there's a hole :( First things I'm thinking about are:
- bug bite
- if there's anything in her cage that she could have caught a quill on & then pulled it out
- perhaps it was an ingrown quill

If the only thing you're seeing wrong is that one little boo-boo (eg, no other skin issues, she's still running and pooping and peeing and eating the normal amounts, no change in weight or behavior, etc...), then I'd just keep it clean monitor the situation to make sure it's getting better.

If I was feeling a bit anxious (as I'm sure you are), I might also apply a little neosporin - regular neosporin only. The "pain relief" and "extra strength" versions have ingredients that are not hedgehog friendly.

And If there's something more than just that one boo-boo, or I was feeling super worried about it, then I'd take her to the vet. Even if the vet visit turns out to be more about reassuring the worried human than curing a sick animal, it can be worth it ;)

I'd take her to the vet and get it checked. It may be nothing but i know of a few cases of cancer on the back that started out looking like that. Better safe than sorry.
