I bought a clear ball for my hedgie to be inside so she can run around the house a little safer. I'm always worried about her getting stuck in a tight little space somewhere and falling and getting hurt. The ball is similar to what gerbils/mice/hamsters run around in, but bigger. I was wondering if anyone else had tried this? Meena doesnt seem to understand the concept yet....Anyone have any advice?
Thanks!

The general consensus on those balls is that it is not safe for hedgehog use.
1) ventilation sucks, and since hedgehogs defecate as they run, they will be engulfed to suffer smelling their own feces the entire time
2) those "ventilation" slits are perfect for catching nails and getting them ripped off.
3) You have no idea if the hedgie is running out of fear, or from enjoyment. They have no choice in the matter, and they could be having mini heart attacks while trying to run away, but can't.

*Edit to add*
If you do a search(located upper right corner) for play pens, you will find many posts on the different pens, materials people here use to make play pens, which is a much safer alternative for the exploring hedgie. And that way, you don't have to hedgie proof an entire room.

I agree, though I've never put Izzy in a running ball I used to have a dwarf hamster who would poop while running, and in addition to having to bathe him far too often I also had to worry about stepping on poop around the house that would fall through the ventilation slits.

After reading posts regarding these running balls I would like to pose this question. Why would the Midwest Hedgehog Rendezvous include them in their festivities? I completely agree with the safety hazards they could pose. I would hope the people that run these events are knowledgeable, but it just makes me wonder.

I won't be mean, and just say that i don't think there is no written rule on hedgehogs about the balls, thus you do have groups using them. I mean, look at the pictures. Hey everyone, lets shove our hedgehog in a giant plastic ball and put him on a ball track in the middle of our table at this event, so we can eat and which him run in horror, pooping and peeing that ball into a colorful mess.

In the end, indeed there are many hedgehogs who can use these balls, no problems. But there are cases of hedgehogs who have lost nails and toes and god knows, I'm sure a whole leg somewhere in the past 20 years. I personally wouldn't endorse them or an event like they are showing in those pictures. Seems like the hedgehog would be scared out of his mind no matter what, strange surroundings, strange smells, strange people, trapped in a ball with no way to get out of the bright light.

PS - The middle picture with the hedgehogs on the race 'track', if you notice, only one hedgehog has actually rolled his ball down the track, the other three are still at the other end, I'm sure running away from the track.

People do a lot of things without realizing what could happen. Even "knowledgeable" people. My parents didn't put me in a car seat, they simply didn't know better. Nowadays, though, they wouldn't dare drive a grandchild around without a seat belt or car seat. They learned, and accepted the new knowledge. That being said, there are still people (I see them around my town) that still do not buckle up their children, even very small ones that I feel should be placed in car seats. You can't change people and their actions, but you can pass on the word when you feel you have learned something valuable. Which is what I feel people on this site do. We (the website forum folks) aren't the gospel, we are all just learning and trying to pass on what we feel is valuable information.

My point being, yes, these people probably did participate in the event. Some of them may still do so, but here on this site some of us feel the wheels are not safe therefore we try and deter you from using one. :)
