I'm a new hedgehog owner, though I have babysat some hedgehogs before. I bought my dear Rupert from Kijiji. He was originally a rescue, and his last owner didn't have enough time to look after his needs and give him enough bonding time. As such, he's very huffy. I know this will take time and we have been bonding slowly. My main concern is that he seems to be quite obese. I'm going to get him a good weight loss food that was recommended by a local breeder, but he doesn't seem to like exercising. He barely goes on his wheel at all. How can I encourage active behaviour so he can slim down and get healthier? I'd like to take him outside in a large play pen so he can run around a bit, but, a) Would I have to do this late in the evening? and b) Should I wait until he's settled in a little bit more to his new environment?

Thanks for any help! :)
