My friend gave me some little rawhide bones as a gift for my hedgehog. She said that she found on the internet that they like them. I'm not sure about it so I thought I'd ask. The kind she bought are labeled as Petco brand Natural Rawhide For Dogs. They are about 2 and a half inches long with the knot sizes varying. Please let me know if I should return them or allow Herisson to play with them.

Not only is rawhide not good for hedgehogs, it's also not good for dogs, and if you touch the slimy part (eww) after your dog chews it, it can be hazardous to your health as well!

If your dog really likes rawhides (mine loves them) then try Beef hide. You can get it at Petsmart and it actually dissolves so it is actually better and safe for them. This is according to my vet who I trust inherently.

I agree with previous posters. Rawhide is horrible for dogs. I work at a healthy pet food store and we won't sell it. Mostly because of the process used to make that nice pretty white colour. They bleach it! would you chew on something that had been boiled in bleach?!

Gross!

A good dog treat that my hedgehog loves is natural dehydrated beef liver. It's a once in a blue moon treat because it is a bit higher in fat than is ideal but it's high in protein and he loves them. They are pretty easy to find too. The brand I like is called Benny's Bullies and they come in orange bags.
