Hello everyone!!

This is my first post because I just found out I am going to be recieving a little boy the week of the 15th. (Hooray!!!)

I am working on setting up a cage for him and already have a steralite container that will become his new home.

I was wondering what everyone's views were when it came to bedding. I have seen lots of pictures of cages using fleece or wood chips. I just wanted to know what would be best for the little guy.

I am living in an apartment so there is no back yard to hose anything out with. But I had cats and have gotten used to emptying litter boxes and the like into trash bags without making a mess. :)

Thanks a ton!!!

Well, I have placed a few sheets of newspaper under their wheels, and now they only seem to go on the newspaper! Miraculous! All 3 of my hedgies seemed to have potty trained themselves in one night! THE MIRACLE OF NEWSPAPER! Works great and it's free!!!

Is there any risk of mites or fleas from newspaper? I only get it from the free newspapers.... and I get them from the newspaper racks. They are not the delivery, thrown on the street type.

Newspaper isn't good to use at all actually. This thread here discusses using newspaper.

It would be better if you put down paper towels under their wheels instead.
I think I'm gonna stick with the newspaper. Today's inks are nontoxic. And I believe they don't rub off!
If you are going to blatantly ignore good advice, please do not gloat about it....it only shows that you have more regard for being right than you do for your hedgehogs well being.
I'm not gloating about it! What's your problem? I'm just giving my opinion. I didn't know that things stated here in a FORUM are God's Law!

Everyone says here that most of what we are trying here is a lot of trial and error. Why is newspaper so bad. Nontoxic inks are bad?

Relax man! Take a chill pill or something!

Seems like you are more interested in being right!
Not all inks today are non toxic. Another main reason for not using newspaper is that it's COLD when wet. Cold and hedgehogs is not a good combination.
Well, I only lay a section of newspaper down. Only in the area under the wheel. Seems like they like to poop and pee in that area. I tried cat litter but the newspaper seems to work 1000 times better! As soon as they relieve themself they run away from it. The rest of the cage is lined with fleece. So far this works the best for me!

And I am not gloating! I think that will be my new signature!

You could try paper towels. It's much safer, and just as easy to clean. It works the same as newspaper, if not more absorbent, and definitely safer, as there are no "unknown" inks.

It may not be a big "chance" but you are still putting your hedgie's life to "chance" hoping that the inks are non-toxic. Paper towels have been tried, tested, and used as a popular choice. While newspaper has possible downsides that are not fully tested.

Are you willing to risk the health of your hedgie just because the newspaper is free?
I work at an office supply store and we have shredders that people can feed paper into. There is nothing written on the paper. Would that work instead of newspaper?

Shredded paper is very dusty so not good for their respiratory systems and even worse if it has ink on it. Sometimes has sharp edges that can cause cuts.
