Hello!

I would like to give my Hedgewig a couple of pine cones to play with in his bin, and I read on here that you should bake them for a while, to sterilize and remove any sap.

The question i have is - does it matter what kind of pine cone? I have all sorts of different ones. I know that the little button ones from the larch won't work - too much risk of getting pieces in places they shouldn't be. :)

Also - someone said something about putting leaves in the dig box. Any recommendations on types of leaves? I am assuming dried leaves, like we would have in the fall.

Thanks!

Any kind should be fine as long as you bake them first. Be sure to watch your hedgehog with them though, in case he decides to nibble on them.

I use dried oak leaves in my hedgie's sandbox and he really likes them. The fake plastic ones you can buy on vines or stems work well too. They don't tear, and you can wash them off and reuse them.

Well, since he tried to take a bite out of a small log I had put on the floor for him to investigate last night, I suspect that he will nibble on the cones as well.

It was funny, though - walks up to the log, sniffed it, and then opened his mouth wide to try and bite it a couple of times, then ignored it after that.

Thanks!
