Hi so I just adopted Quilliam Wallace yesterday so we are still in the setting up phase. He is about a year old. I've got his home all set up. bedding, wheel hiding hut fleece blankets, food, water, now I am thinking about toys.
He came with a PVC tunnel but that's it.
I know jingle cat balls are good but do stuffed cat toys smell like catnip and bother hedgies? he liked the toilet paper tube. So I guess I have 2 questions. Make that 3. (Hey I warned you paranoid mommy here)
1. What are your hedgies favorite toys?
2. Are there any unsafe toys I should worry about?
3. Specifically with stuffed animals any worries?

Quilly and I thank you for your help.

You just want to be careful about any strings that could get wrapped around a little hedgehog toe or get caught on their toes (for stuffed animals or any toys).
I avoid catnip, but I don't think I've read anything that confirms that it is bad for hedgehogs to consume. I'm just not sure, so I would rather be safe than sorry.
My hedgies love their wheel best. Toilet paper tubes are also highly favourable. I also get them little cat balls to play with.
Hedgehogs will play with the most random things, so once you get to know your little one you can find toys suited to his personality (like if he loves digging).

Keep in mind that some hedgies are not interested in playing with anything.

Mine likes to run on her wheel and she likes to burrow in her dig box. She also likes going thru her (ferret) crinkle tunnel, but only under supervision. She also has a clay flower pot tipped over on its side to sit in. (I hide treats in it, so I know she goes inside) You can also cut the ends off of the large oatmeal containers and make a tube with that. Also empty cardboard tissue boxes can be interesting for hedgie--they are also disposable!

I have read about other hedgies playing with small trucks or cars, little ping pong-type balls, little stuffed animals and their little fleece blankies.

It's kind of trial and error while you learn what they like!

My hedgie LOVES his dig bag. It's the same concept of a dig box (fleece strips, some safe, large, clean rocks and a few treats to root around for) but just in a tote bag (with weekly inspections to make sure there aren't any loose threads inside).

He likes to have something to push around too, like a little empty box he can hide in after he's down scooting it around the floor.

Hedgies often enjoy playing with things they can crawl in or under. Some like it when they crinkle or make noise. I'd try out some tissue paper, it's gentle for the little guy, it makes exciting noises, and he can do a TON of stuff with it. If you use toilet paper tubes make sure to slit them as hedgehogs can wedge themselves into them and suffocate. Hedgehogs tend to enjoy jingling things, so a bell might be fun for them. Some also like to climb- it truly depends on his/her personality as to what toys they'd like.
