Please post good vets you have been to in Ontario. Name the vet clinic as well as the name of the veterinarian you saw as sometimes a vet clinic can have both good and bad vets. Put the city as the subject line.

Thanks

Dr. Munn

Edited by Nancy to add: This is just a note to add to hedgielover's post, that Dr Munn is very highly recommended by both new and long time hedgie owners. In the Toronto area he is the most recommended vet.

I would also like to add. At the Burloak Animal Clinic above:

Dr Lisa McKinnen is also wonderful with Hedgehogs. Very professional, kind and knowledgeable.

The clinic itself is well run, friendly staff and equipped thoroughly.

Highly recommended!

Dr. Renee Fleming
Guelph Animal Hospital, Guelph

She specializes in small animals-- not necessarily exotics or hedgehogs, although she has had hedgies of her own. She has been very committed to helping Beck in diagnosing his congestive heart failure and finding an effective treatment. She was not afraid to admit when she lacked experience or knowledge about hedgies and conferred with her colleagues who had done more exotic work until she found a treatment that worked for us.

Doctor Vanderzon saw Annabelle when she was having really bad dry skin problems and was very knowledgable and friendly, as well as good with her.

I am not sure how to post this(mods feel free to edit)... I would like to post my NON RECOMMENDATION for Dr. Wolfgang Zenker at:

Burloak Animal Clinic
3060 Lakeshore Rd. West
Oakville
L6L 1J2
(905)-827-1171

I agree that the clinic staff was friendly and the clinic was clean, however Dr.Zenker offered no support for Daisy when she was sick, looked her quickly over and was VERY quick to inform me that "she had the wobbler thing"... he had NO bedside manner, flipped Daisy over and poked at her for less than 2 minutes before asking me "what do you want me to do?"... well I would like you to tell me your thoughts and what we can do to make her comfortable. :(

I also found the clinic highly over priced for a quick exam ($85), as well as their medications, which were outrageously over priced for 1 5mg tablet of prednisone (I can purchase a bottle of 50 tablets from my cat's vet for the same price they charged for 1 tablet).

I believe at one point Dr.Zenker may have been up to date on treatments, however as of our appointment in September of 2011, I believe that is no longer the case.

I would like to repeat that due to our experience I would CERTAINLY NOT recommend Dr.Zenker.

Dr. Rick Axelson, Dr. Evan Mavromatis & Dr. Hanadie Nur

As a new hedgehog owner, we have never need to take our hedgehog to this clinic, however the doctors here have been treating our reptiles for several years and I have the greatest confidence in them. The clinic specializes in exotics animals of all sorts, both cold and warm blooded, scaled, furred and feathered. From conversations with the staff and doctors I know they are familiar with and do treat hedgehogs.

Dr. Brigette Rudolf, Dr. Lauren Brownell

This vet's office is the best! They are very caring, accommodating and do a thorough job with reasonable prices. They can usually get you in same day, or within a few days.

Dr. Rudolf is exceptional, she really takes great pride in her work and does not rush you out the door like many other vets. The vet themself does a follow up call the next day to ensure things are going well. A few of my pets have seen her and she's always been great.

Dr. Brownell is also great. When I brought my hedgie Moka in with a lump and was given an estimate of $400 worth of work and testing that would need to be done I was devastated. She called me a few days later and said if I couldn't afford to do all the testing that they could try some other things that would be more affordable. I was very appreciative.

Even with trying different things Moka never recovered and I made an appt. to have him put down but he didn't make it, this vets office were more than accommodating in taking him and providing a burial all at a minimal cost.
All of the employees were very considerate and understanding, the experience truly help me feel better.

This vet's office is great for people who live in the Durham Region and do not want to travel to the Links Rd. in Toronto.

Prior to living in Durham, I lived in Scarborough and would take my hogs to the Links Rd. animal clinic, I found them be overly expensive, and one of the vets there (Dr. Hanadie Nur) determined my hedgehog had mites and over $300 in treatment later, another vet at the same clinic (Dr. Evan Mavromatis) determined that she never had mites in the first place. It was frustrating to say the least and I always found it was difficult to get an appointment that wasn't a week away.

Amherst Animal Hospital - Toronto

It's on Eglinton Ave and Markham Rd. I went to Dr. Robin Lane, who came highly recommended to me by other hedgehog owners. He's very nice and knowledgeable, and squeezed me into his day when I had an emergency with my little one.

Dr.Sawyer is an incredibly knowledgeable vet. She has an incredible bedside manner and was gentle with my little guy.

Carl is the vet tech that I had, and he is also wonderful.

Prices at Millennium City Vet are fare. Highly recommend this vet!

I completely agree! The Links Road Bird and Animal Clinic is wonderful.
I have taken both of my hedgehogs there and the vets were knowledgeable, helpful, and very caring towards my hedgehogs.
I would absolutely recommend them. They are expensive, but worth it.

May be the obvious answer for Guelph, ON; but the OVC exotics clinic (attached to the small animal clinic) has no problems at all handling hedgehogs 24/7. I took Reggie there this weekend for an emergency visit and they saw him right away, following up with me via phone fairly regularly. They get hedgehogs somewhat frequently and are knowledgeable about their various issues. Plus it's part of one of the best veterinary colleges in the world!

I just wanted to say Dr. Renee Fleming is still around four years later and great! She coaxed Reggie out of his huffy ball with liver treats, which he loved so much he did some crazy gymnastics to annoint as much as possible. Very professional, will definitely keep her as my regular hedgehog vet.

I have had three hedgies in the past 6 years, unfortunately all of them required vet visits as they aged and their health declined. We went to several vets who claimed to have experience with hedgies in the Ottawa/Gatineau region until we found one that really knew what he was talking about, Dr. Daren Auger at:

Carling Animal Hospital
2268 Carling Avenue
(at Woodroffe)
Ottawa, Ontario K2B 7G1
Tel: (613)725-3439
Fax: (613)725-3219
[email protected]

Not only does he know hedgies, he is a wonderful, compassionate vet who goes that extra mile for your pet's health. We drove to see him from over an hour away and it was worth it. Knowing that your hedgie is in the capable hands of Dr. Auger is worth the drive. And at $78 the exotic pet fee is very reasonable.
