Hi everyone. I am new to hedgehogs. I have a male and a female about 12 weeks old. They are in separate 82 C Marchioro cages with wheels made by Reaper. They each have a water bottle, a food bowl, a hideout, and a wheel. I am using carefresh bedding.

I did get them in a pet store. The store is famous in my area for quality. The owner has been involved with hedgehogs for many years. They are white with some brown quills. Sort of like pictures of pintos that I have seen. The female has pink ears and nose and red eyes. The male has brown nose and ears and brown eyes.

So far so good. My first question is about food. The man sent them home with me with quality ferret food. When I asked if I should feed them insects he said, "Not my hedgehogs."

I would appreciate any comments or suggestions regarding food.

Thank you, Faye

Get them off of the ferret food and onto a mix of at least two quality cat foods.
viewtopic.php?f=6&t=15 That is a thread Reaper made where he has a list of the best cat foods for hedgies.

As for insects. Mealworms and crickets are very good for hedgehogs and are a stable in a diet. Feeding them is a good thing.

Also there is a variety of fruits and vegetables and cooked meats that you can feed them as treats for some extra nutrients/yumminess.

Thank you. I printed out the food list. I use Wellness for my two chihuahuas so will probably go with the Wellness for the hedgies. Will gradually change them over.
