The thermostat has a probe that you place in the cage. It "reads" the temp. You then plug your lamp base into the thermostat, and the thermostat into your outlet. You need the heat emitter in the lamp base, hehe, but that part is pretty obvious. Then you can set the thermostat to be inbetween 75-80 (for example). It will automatically turn the heat on when the temp drops, and shut it off when it's sufficent. You can place the lamp directly on the bars as long as it's high enough away from your hedgie (as in, as long as the cage is pretty tall and nothing is actually near the bars), or you can get a clamp lamp so it's a little more secure and position it so it's just above the bars. I prefer the idea of a clamp lamp fixture :)

I would also get a seperate digital thermometer, just in case one malfunctions you can tell better that way :)
