So, Murphey's got an abscess (ouchie!). I took him to the vet today and he got hooked up with some antibiotics in the form of Baytril, and he gets 1/2 cc twice a day for ten days. The vet also got him some Quadritop for his ears which apparently have a fungal infection. So, I'm wondering a couple things...

1.) Anything I should know about syringe feeding and general stuff about when your hedgie is on antibiotics. (Also, maybe one of the admins can make a sticky about syringe feeding (the how to's, how not to make a mess and so forth) Also, Murphey annoints over EVERYTHING, so Im imagining the antibiotics wont be much different. He's not hurting anything is he does annoint with it, right?

2.)Any advice on applying this topical ointment to Murphey's ears? The best idea I got was putting the ointment on a q-tip and rubbing the q-tip on his ears. He freaks out when I touch his ears though. Any advice?

3.) Lastly, does anybody know anything about rooting? My vet suggested that helped irritate his abscess. I had know idea what rooting was, and that's what he's doing. I've noticed him burrowing (or trying to) right after he ate and I've been trying to get it all on film for over a month now, just to see what you guys thought he might be doing. As soon as I turn on a light (for better lighting for the camera) he stops and makes his way back to his igloo.

4.) Anything else I may have missed. Any advice for the next few days?

And lastly, I have pics of the abscess if anybody needs/wants to see 'em.

there isn't really much you can do about anointing when attempting to syringe feed, But for a method of syringe feeding you can see: http://wiki.hedgehogcentral.com/tiki-in ... ge+Feeding

Try starting to play with your hedgies ears. I trained vex to get use to it by placing my finger first on the side of his face, and after he got used ot it i jsut placed my finger on his ear, and after he got used to that i started to move my finger in a circle, with NO medicine on it. Now i can play with his ears, and it is much easier to get stuff on them. He still squirms if i take to long, or if i don't give him a mealie to chew on.
