I am looking for a female hedgehog. I have a male who I rescued and he isn't very social. I take him out to play but he just lays in my arms and hisses at me

Are you looking for a female hedgehog because you think she will be different than your male in terms of sociability?
Because even female hedgehogs act the way you’ve described your male. In fact, all hedgehogs act like that and it is only a rare exception for one to not.

Hedgehogs are solitary animals. Sometimes, two female can be cohabbed but it is not without risk. A male and female should NEVER be cohabbed; the male will stress the female and could kill her.

Not just that, but you will end up with litters constantly if they don't fight. This is bad for the female and should be avoided. If you simply would like to have two, that's ok, but they must be housed completely separately and not allowed to meet. They can and will mate very quickly if allowed to interact with each other.

Have patience, hold him in your arms without any blankets. Try to let him walk on you to get use with your scent. Talk, sing, take him out at the same hour, establish a rutine. My hedgy Rosa was the same, but now I have her for for 15 months and she will stay with me more then I can sometimes, she is upset when I put her in her cage. Good luck.😊
