My hedgie, Dexter, came with some food - I'm pretty sure it's meow mix, or something along that line. Basically, not healthy. Right now he's on Authority weight management - not the best, but good protein and fat levels, and the first couple ingredients are meat. It does have corn in it though, which I know is just a filler. Mostly, I didn't want to put switch him on a super rich food right away, as I figured he'd have enough adjusting to do.

I plan on giving him Blue Buffalo light, and probably at least one other ultra premium food. I was wondering about mixing in 'junk foods' so to speak; some sites say it's important, some not.

Should I keep Authority in the mix, with the other premiums? Should I keep a little meow mix in there, as a low percentage? Or should I stop those, and wean him onto only higher quality foods? You can see why I'm confused!

If you want to do a 'junk food,' check out Reaper's list & add one of the commercial 'hedgehog' foods listed. Some people do the junk food, some don't. I think the variety in the bowl is more important. You wouldn't want to always eat the same food so why should the hedgie. With a good mix of 3 (ish) foods, they can choose which they want to eat.

I've read some people attributing to the mix of junk & high quality food a longer life span. Sylvie is only almost 1 yr so I can't speak to that. She does have a 'junk' in her dish though that some days she'll eat & some she won't.
