My husband and I cuddle our hedgehogs all the time and have never gotten sick in the 5+ years we have had hedgehogs. We always make sure to wear a t-shirt when cuddling and put our clothes in the hamper to wash afterward. We be sure to wash our hands/arms after cuddle time.

I think the chances of catching a disease from a pet hog are much lower than catching anything from a human during normal everyday interaction. I don't have a pet hog, only some wild visitors. One autumn night this young girl walked in reeking to high heavens by woodsmoke and tar (likely been too close to a bonfire) so i gave her a warm (soap-free) bath and checked for ticks & fleas while at it (she had neither).
