i accidentally dropped my hedgehog

I'm freaking out a bit..
i was gifted a hedgehog by a family member as she had gotten him more for the kids and they had lost interest - i was really excited to give him a happier life but the bonding process is really hard, and its resulted in him jumping out of my hands before i was able to set him down.
he doesnt just hiss and huff at me, he often genuinely tries to run and climb away when hes out of his cage - i cant even put him in his play pen until i get a bigger one because now he can climb out of it.
ive only had him for about a month and ive "dropped" a couple of times but not from a great height and its always been on a bed or a sofa but this time around he was realllllyy anxious out of his cage from the get go (hes always anxious but some days are better than others and tonight wasnt a very good night) and was nearly jumping off my sofa so i tried to get him quickly into his play pen (which is just really a kiddies paddling pool and the ground underneith it is wooden floor). i feel so guilty, i really was being as careful as possible but he just LEPT and there was a bit of a thud and ugh...
he started peeing and pooping straight away, first just where he was standing then moved to his litter tray which was in the playpen. when he finished in his litter tray he just... stayed. not in a ball, and his spines werent overly spikey, but im scared incase ive genuinely traumatised him. i gave him some mealworms after to try and say sorry, then (with some difficulty) got him back in his cage.
how resistant are hedgehogs to things like this? you see videos of bigger pets like cats and dogs fall and bump their heads a lot and theyre typically fine, but hedgehogs are so much smaller..... :(
bonding is proving to be hard enough without this happening - what should i do ? I cant even bathe him or clip his wee nails and hes proving to be a really good climber so im questioning how safe it is to even take him out of the cage but i dont want him to be stuck in there for the rest of his life but he just really seems to hate me and as careful as i was being im scared incase hes hurt/traumatised. hes walking fine and still egar to get away when i had to handle him to get him into his cage, he hasnt made any noises out of the ordinary or anything..

i really was being so careful :(

ok, the first thing is to put the cage on the ground, when you take the hedgie out so it can jump out your hands and stay at that level don't lift it higher it probably has some trust issues. this is going to take a long time and lots of patience for you to earn its trust back. baby steps

the most important part is to get her as close to the ground as possible to avoid any future drops, please.

let me know how she's doing

good luck

I had a hedgehog myself! He has been building a relationship with me for a very long time! And you also need to gradually build communication with him by feeding him and spending time with him!

I trust you were being very careful! I recommend that before you hold him you set up a soft mat-like area in case he falls also you could place a piece of your clothing in the cage so he can get used to your scent! Best wishes

I've had my hog for 3 months and it's still very difficult to get her to trust me but if every time you deal with him you give him a treat that way he associates you with treats. I never even bother to handle Luna May unless I got to treat my hand. Also never make them do anything. Also there's something online called quill chill and I'll put the link in here but it's a dropper you give them once a day and it will chill them out of the time. The best. Actually it's from a company called hedgehog and Friends just look it up, quill chill. Works miracles for huffy hogs.
Well, duly noted. Want to know what I believe? I believe that you're way out of your depth in this matter. So the next time that you want to come in here and tell me what I'm doing wrong, you are welcome to keep it to yourself.
I'm sensing a degree of hostility toward me and or my Hedgie (Frank). I don't know who you are or what you think you know about hedgehogs, but let me tell you honey, you're wrong.
