My two hedgehogs were sent home with ferret food. I have learned from reading here to make a mix of the better cat foods with grape nuts etc. myself. I plan to do this.

How should I handle switching the food? Should I add one new cat food at a time or make up the mix and switch gradually from the ferret food?

Thank you. :)

You should go ahead and make up your new cat food mix and gradually wean them over to the new mix. First week 1/4 new food, second week 1/2 new food, third week 3/4 new food, and by the fourth week your hedgies should have adjusted just fine. Much easier to make the transition slowly than to upset their tummys with a sudden switch. Very good question, glad you asked.

It would also be good to mix in ONE new food at a time. So you know which food they love to eat, what food they "might" not like or be allergic to, and how it reacts to their tummies.

As Pixie said, a slow transition is good, and just slowly add in more kibbles of the new food, as you take out some of the old. Just keep a close eye on the consistancy of the poop. ^_^

A lot of hedgies don't like Grape Nuts. Mine picks around it, so lately, I've been grinding them up in a coffee grinder and sprinkling it onto his favourite NB green pea and duck. You might find that infant rice cereal is easier, as you can skip the grinding part and just sprinkle.

Hi Pixie, thank you. I was going to switch gradually but did not know if I should add one cat food at a time. I will make my mix and switch gradually.

Took a quick look at your website. Will look more closely soon.

Thank you,
