There are many breeds of hedgehogs how can I tell which is which? Are there breeds that live longer than others or are more gentle than others?

the main breed is the African Pygmy Hedgehog which is actualy a cross between 2 or 3 other breeds. The APH is the only sold in North America as pets, so all the ones that breeders have for sale, or that you see in a pet store are APH. They come in many different sizes and colours but are all one breed. There are a few Long Eared hedgehogs around but they are quite rare and alot bigger.

Like Nikki said there are only pet African hedgehogs that you will get here in the states. There are greater and lesser tenrecs, but they aren't hedgehogs and have much different, difficult care.

Thank you for the help I have heard of African Pygmy Hedgehogs but I did not know that they are the only ones sold in the United States of America.
