Are these at all acceptable or accepted by the hedgies if they are safe? My sons are concerned about our wheel not arriving yet, but I can't believe a hedgie could use a leash or harness. My oldest said that he thought the class pet at school had a leash. Wouldn't it be tough w/ the quills and getting it on??? My hunch is that the wheel wil be here soon and this will be a mute point. But, I said I'd ask, so please advise. I can't see walking the hedgie like our dog, but I deger to you experts!

I'm pretty sure that one person on here...I don't remember who exactly, but I keep thinking either LizardGirl or Zoologist (sorry if it's neither of you, lol)...has a ferret leash for their hedgehog. I'm not sure how well it works though.

I think...Considering the circumstances of your girl and the reason why you have her, it might not be the best idea to stress her out with something like a harness and leash.

You would probably be better off making a play pen for her, where she can roam and explore while supervised. You son can also sit in the pen with her and let her explore him too.

Thanks, everyone. I have to believe it would be too stressful for the Spikerina to be harnessed - not to mention my hands during the attempt! She's doing so well w/ us that I don't want to lose her trust. We just love her! That face - who could harm such a thing? Sick, sick, people...

Anyway if the CW doesn't arrive tomorrow, we'll close off the halls and let her run. We've been playing a lot w/ her - making a pen out of our outstretched legs. She's not running, per se, but it's been a great bonding experience for us all.

I get nervous w/ leashes, anyway - my friends lost their bunny to strangulation when he got caught in theirs, not that I'd leave her unattended w/ it on.

Harnesses are not safe for hedgehogs. Problem is, you have to get them on fairly tight or the animal can escape. With a hedgehog, if you get in on properly with the quills down, when they quill up or roll up, it becomes too tight and can cause injury.

yeah, its me Cloud has a harness and a collar. the collar is used ONLY when he is roaming around outside off the leash, because it has his tag on it, but i;d never use it to restrain him.
i use an iguana leash/bunny leash for Cloud. it's made out of rope and you can get it on pretty tight without hurting him. I have a picture of him on the leash, i'll post it in a bit, but here is the type of leash i use for him and my rats. its less bulky than a harness, and a lot easier to get on. he's never wiggled out of it. it's made by four paws.

maybe I just have a slow hedgehog, but even when he full out runs, he isnt what I would call speedy... is a leash necessary? if he strays too far, you just go pick him up.

How did you has accustomed hedgehog to a leash?
Maybe you have any tricks and rules that will help to do this?
Perhaps every day wear a leash for a longer time..and hedgehog will get used to it ?
As I understand, hedgehog age and character are important in this case..
