My first thoughts when I hear a hedgie is munching on cat litter are:
1. That could be dangerous. Stop using the litter and try something else - even a papertowel will do. What kind of cat litter have you been using?
2. Maybe hedgie is hungry and/or isn't getting enough nutrition from his kibble. What kind of kibble is your little one on? And how much does he eat?

I believe you should "free feed" him...Always make sure he has food in his bowl. I have to toss a few kibbles each night (our spoiled little darlings wouldnt dare dream of eating "stale" food..lol) but i always make sure that i put a little more in their bowl than i know they will eat in a night, that way i know if they get a little more hungry than usual in the night, then they will have plenty til i wake up in the morning to feed them more.

As for bedding i personnaly switched to fleece liners a while back. I didnt like the mess of the shavings and heard horror stories about the carefresh causing bowel impactions when ingested. It sounds like carefresh is what you are using and from what i hear some hedgies develop a "taste" for it.

So to answer you questions a little more direct:

1) always put a little more in his bowl than he will eat in a night

2) I would suggest switching to fleece liners.

What type/brand of cat food are you feeding?

Does he finish his entire bowl of kibble everyday? If he does, then yes, you are feeding too little. If there's always some left over, then it should be fine, but it does depend on what food you are feeding him.

Some hedgies just develope a taste for their litters, and you have to take them off it, immediately, before it gets to the point where they can get an impaction. Impactions are always scary...
