I just bought a hedgie names Spike. He's about 5 months old. The first day and night we had him he was fine, but suddenly he started scratching. When we first got him his skin was fine, now it's slightly white. I looked around at books and sites, and it doesnt look like he has mites....he doesnt have any symptoms that pertain to mites except for itchiness. I called the place I got him from, they said that it was likely the fact I changed his bedding. He was in pine, I switched him to some Kaytee recycled wood fiber bedding. After hearing about the switch possibly causing the dry skin, I put him back in pine. Also, he is in air conditioning now, before it wasnt air conditioned where he was.

So what do you guys think, mites or dry skin? If it is dry skin (I think it might be) what should I do to help his skin and relieve the itchiness? I read that putting a drop of vegetable oil in his food will help restore some moisture in his skin.
