I thought I would put in a post about Chinchilla Sand. I use it in the litter tray below the wheel. It collects wee etc and cleans the feet. I put up a similar post on another forum and not one person said that Chinchilla Sand caused a problem. Who uses it on here? Any problems? I would like to study actual problems not oh it could cause this problem. I have been using it for months and my other forum recomeds it. anyone on here using Chinchilla Sand please also post on here

Chinchilla sand IMO is not safe for hedgies,to big of a risk getting stuck in or on body parts and such.

I agree with Larry. Chinchilla sand is not safe. It is too fine and will dry out their skin. I've never see any place that recommends it but there are a lot of sites that recommend things that aren't safe. There was one of the forums that someone used it and it caused eye irritation. It might have been on CnQ. Julie, do you remember?

Wouldn't use that too. If it's really sand, it's kinda coarse and not that soft and can cause respiratory infections and clog to privates parts. If it's dust, well it's even more risk of URI of clocking in privates parts.

You probably won't find many actual problems because it seems like people on here tend to think of potential problems and then prevent them. Also with issues like it's dustiness it would be hard to prove it was the cause of any resulting URI or respiratory infections even though it probably was.

I posted up the topic of Chinchilla Sand on my other forum and no one came forward with any problems. It hold the wee in a lump. Good with 2's as well. It doesn't dry out the skin. My lad is prone to dry skin and he has no problem with it. It helps clean feet which is better than a water bath which really does dry skin

If it works for you, that's great, but please don't advertise to other members that it is a good thing to use when there are clearly so many risks associated with using it. Just because your hedgie hasn't inhaled it and had problems yet, doesn't mean someone else who tries it won't have difficulties like that. Better safe than sorry, especially with hedgehogs.

I said "advertise that it is good to use". This means don't tell people it is great and safe to use when it is really not, because someone may read it and take your advice, and harm your hedgie.

Any type of sand or dust can easily clump inside the penile sheath/vulva of a hedgehog and cause a blockage.

No one has been rude to you here. You asked for opinions on the sand, and we expressed our concern with the safety. I don't see that as being rude as more of telling you something you don't want to hear.

I am going to lock this thread. Clearly it is not going anywhere productive.
