CHE making weird sounds

One of my CHEs just started making a buzzing sound every few seconds, and it stopped almost instantly when I turned the temp down. Could that be a sign that something's about to malfunction? Do they tend to do that if they get too hot or the bulb is about to die? The one that's making the noise is a 5.5" lamp with a 100 watt bulb, if that makes any difference.

A 5.5 lamp is too small for a CHE and causes them to build up too much heat. That causes them to burn out quicker. It may be getting ready to burn out. I'd get a 10" fixture instead.

Ok, I'll order a new one tonight. The cage is 4 feet long and ~2 feet wide. Should I get 2 10" lamps? And are 100 watt bulbs still ok, or should I go up to 120-150?

Yes, I'd go with two 10" lamps. 100 watts might still be okay - it depends on the temperature of the room his cage is located in, and what temperature you're trying to keep the cage at. If the room temp is a lot lower than what you want the cage temp at, you may want to go to a higher wattage to make sure they can handle the task. Higher wattage shouldn't harm anything anyway, even if it's not strictly necessary most of the time - they'd be ready to kick in extra for an emergency, and a thermostat would keep the cage to the right temp otherwise.
