I was thinking of getting a ceramic heater to put over Archimedes cage, he stays pretty warm but I'm afraid temp fluxes in the room are messing with his health. He is pretty lazy and only comes out to eat (he has a nice healthy appetite that's for sure).

I was thinking of using this controller:

and this emitter:

As far as what I'd put it in they have a nice ceramic socket and hood at a local pet store that'd I'd actually get the ceramic emitter and hood from.

Are these on the right track or should I be looking for something else? Or does anyone else have recommendations? I was hoping I could find a model that had a temp sensor that I could insert into the cage on the roof of the first story to kind of get a gauge of the ambient temp between levels. (I'd dangle it about 1inch from the roof but stilll out of reach of his blackhole of a mouth.

My only concern with that Temperature Controller is that it has a 5*F temperature swing on either side of where its set at, which equals a 10*F difference between high and low temp, that's alot of change for a hedgie.

It means that if you have it set for say 74F the temp will range anywhere between 69 and 79F

I have a thermostat controller that looks a lot like that, though different brand name. I'm going to guess it's probably the same thing sold under different names. It works well for me. Despite that +/- 5degree disclaimer, I haven't seen the temperature vary by that much in my little one's cage (I have a thermometer stuck to the inside of her house so I can monitor independently). The other thing I like about it is that it has more than on place into which to plug the heat emitters - I'm using two right now - one over her sleeping/eating area and one over her wheel area. A big bonus to that is when one of mine conked out, the other picked up the slack until I was able to run out to the store ;)

Nice idea about probe location.
