Hi,

My hedgehog, Watson, has always seemed pretty healthy. He's older, about 2 1/2 years old.

His eyes are clear, he eats well, he exercises pretty regularly.

Lately his cage has been smelling really bad. I used to need to clean it every two weeks, then every week, now it starts to smell every three days. Is this normal? He's not any more active than usual.

At first I thought maybe it was due to adulthood (male, maybe more territorial, scent marking, etc.). But its gotten a lot worse, so I want to make sure he's alright.

Its upsetting the people I live with so I would like to find a solution besides changing his litter every three days. More importantly, I don't want to ignore it if could be a sign of illness.

It could actually be a sign of illness. It could also be that something in his diet is causing a stronger smell. Have you started feeding him anything new recently?

I do think it would be a good idea to see the vet though. It could be something intestinal that needs attention.
