I don't like the plug-ins either. I find that they're worse than the sprays, because it's constantly there, and the smell it too strong for me.
Have you tried something like Arm and Hammer Fridge-n-Freezer Odor Absorber?
It's like putting it in the fridge, but you can put it somewhere around the cage, and it doesn't have any smell.
