If anyone has read my previous post with all my worries about Yuki's previous weight problem (http://www.hedgehogcentral.com/foru...-help-changing-food-hedgie-hardly-eats-2.html) you'll understand I'm so happy my little boy has managed to put on weight!
To summarise, a few months ago I was struggling to change over his food which made him go on a mini food strike (to be honest I'm still struggling to get him to eat dry cat food! ><) but I had a major breakthrough and now he eats all 3 types of cat food I bought (still with a bit of mazzuri *sigh* in a wet mix mush, mixed with cut up superworms (x2) and a little water. Doing this for him every night (gradually increasing the cat food quantity ~ I introduced one at a time slowly over the months and still increasing one quantity) made him steadily put on weight! He also occasionally got canned mealies, superworm pupaes and wax worms as treats.
However, I'm now just a little concerned that he's continuously putting on weight. I weigh him every night and his food (his food dish weighs approx 25-30gs of cat food inc the superworms with a little water). Last night he's now his heaviest at 345gs! He doesn't look overweight, more of a teardrop shape, before he was too skinny and a ) ( to a | | kinda shape.
I just wanted to check, is giving him superworms x2 every night too much for him, since increasing the insects (including giving him the alien pupae treats and canned mealies) is when I noticed his weight jumped up. I know really experience owners feed their hedgies a lot of insects so I'm a little confused why my boy seems to put on weight just having a couple supers and the odd additional treat, is it just too much fat with the fat content of his mixed dry cat foods? I thought he was a runner but maybe he doesn't run for a long time, I'm not sure since he only does it during the night. His wheel is covered by the morning so I believe he is! ^^
Anyways, should I go back to giving just 1x supers a night and feed more mealies since these have a lower fat content or is it completely fine for him to be putting on so much weight and continue to do so?
I'm planning to go bioactive in the near future so I'm a little worried, if he has access to a cuc in his viv will he become overweight if he manages to eat a lot of them, since only a couple insects has made him gain so much weight in a short period of time?! Any advice would be much appreciated, thank you
