nikki Aquariums are designed to hold moisture in and to be 100% air and water tight. This is great for it's intended use but horrible for an animal that comes from the desert where there is little moisture and low humidity. They have no ventilation, even without a top on them, and if you find one that is large enough to properly house a hedgehog it would be so heavy that you wouldn't be able to clean it properly. Hedgehogs also have trouble seeing the glass walls on the tank and often will run back and forth along the glass rubbing their noses raw.

SarahBella97 Maybe I ahould have worded that better... I did not mean rails. Whats the word... "Siding" I guess?
And oh, are aquariums not good because of the silicone that lines them, and the hedgehog chews them? Or?[/QUOTE]
Aquariums aren't good because they have really bad air flow

Petlover500 I would also recommend taking her to the veterinarian to get her checked up on. Even if it ends up being nothing too serious- it better to be safe than sorry (:
Like Artemis mentioned, hedgies don't have very good depth perception, so ramps and levels should always be closed off.
Perhaps DIY some rails on the higher floors, or switch to a large aquarium or bin cage?

Artemis-Ichiro She probably did, you need to take her to the vet ASAP, she's probably in pain, they are pray animals so they hide any injury for as long as they can.

They have also bad eye sight and depth perception and that's why they should never have open ramps or open loft spaces, ramps and lofts (second floor) should always be totally enclosed.

Also, since they are tiny animals a 5 inch drop is high enough to cause damage.

Am I Doing Something Wrong??

So I recently bought my hedgehog, Lucy, a new cage. It is two levels, which I was super skeptical about, but it gives her so much space to explore! It took Lucy a while to understand the ramp that leads down to the bottom level of the cage, and she fell twice. I don't know if its me being worried, or if she actually got really hurt on the 5 inch fall! I think something might be wrong with her back leg! She runs on her wheel every single night, but I've noticed that she goes to itch her ear, and her back right leg cant reach as far as normal! I have also noticed that she will walk around her cage normally, but she will sit down for a few seconds every few feet! She has also been struggling to get up at nights, i've been having to wake her up and she has been really grumpy, but i blame that on the fact that my house is cold and her heat lamp wasn't working!
Does anyone have an explanation!?
