Raw feet?

So Beckett dearly lovs to run. He's got a plastic wheel (solid, not mesh) and a flying saucer. He uses them HARDCORE. Lately, he's been running until his poor little feet bleed. I've been trying to give him lots of supervised playtime just on the floor, but he still runs a lot on his wheel. The wheels are kept very clean, and they're not abrasive materials or anything... he just runs A LOT.

Any ideas on how I can keep his feet getting so beat up? I've been keeping him very clean to prevent infections. Thanks!

I've never had this happen but have heard of it happening to other hedgehogs that are big time runners. As far as I know you just have to take the wheel out if their feet get bad and keep it out till the feet heel. I know this is true especially if the feet are bleeding I don't know what to do if they just look raw.

Poor little guy. Perhaps drier winter air has something to do with it if this has become a problem only more recently. I'd think about limiting his wheel usage... maybe take it out for a little while during the night (if he'll get off of it for long enough) until his feet have adjusted. I'm also wondering if moisturing would help or if that's just silly??

And, as always, keep those footsies clean like you're already doing.
