Re: How long do hedgehogs take to attempt Hibernation?

Thanks everybody!
It's hard to know when things like power outages and stuff appear, we sometimes have gotten them randomly when the weather was peachy! I'll take your advice and have as much stuff prepared in emergency, and pray that if the power ever goes out while nobody is home, that my hedgie would be able to survive for a few hours. Thanks again!

Re: How long do hedgehogs take to attempt Hibernation?

The thing about battery backup systems is that the batteries in them are usually very minimal or RIDICULOUSLY expensive. Most of the time the purpose of them is to just last enough for important equipment to be shutdown properly. Computers with battery backup systems usually have software so that if the power goes out, the computer starts saving and shutting everything down. Even a 500 dollar UPS (Uninterruptible power supply) that both conditions power coming in, and acts as a battery backup, is going to only last around 5 minute for a full load of around 800 watts.

Most space heaters draw a LOT more power than that. A couple of 100 watt CHEs are going to last quite a bit longer, comparatively, but then you're looking around 45 minutes to an hour depending on if they immediately turn all the way on, or if they stutter as the heat slowly leaves the house, but they are short term solutions at best.

Re: How long do hedgehogs take to attempt Hibernation?

How long it takes depends on many factors.

During the day when hedgie is snuggled in bed sleeping, it will take longer than if it happens over night while they are up and active. During the day, even if the lights go out, there is usually still enough light coming in from windows that most hedgehogs won't get out of bed.

How long does the house take to cool off? Some houses cool off really fast while others retain heat for quite a while. This also depends on the wind and outside temperature. Bitter cold and windy and a house is going to get cold much faster than if there is no wind.

It also depends on the individual hedgehog. Some can tolerate temperatures dropping much better than others. If the hedgehog is very temperature and light sensitive to begin with, he/she will be affected sooner than one that isn't quite as sensitive.

If there is bad weather predicted, give hedgie a mitten warmer or a snuggle safe disc before leaving the house for the day. Even if the power goes off, hedgie will be warm.

If hedgie does get cool or start to attempt hibernation, remember to NEVER put him/her in water. The sudden warmth can shock their system and also, a wet hedgie is at risk of getting cold again.

Re: How long do hedgehogs take to attempt Hibernation?

I just posted about the power going out, this is a worry for me too. I would say try to get a battery backup that lasts a few hours. It may cost a bit of money, but it would leave the light and heater running for a couple of hours or until you got home. I'm scared about this too, especially during winter storms.

As for how long, I'll let someone who knows more answer that, but I believe it can start pretty fast. Once their body temp gets down the process begins, but it usually will take a while for it to, well, be past the fixing point. But again I'm not sure. I've heard of hedgehog owners waking up in the morning to a cold-bellied hedgehog and they survived. You just have to know exactly what to do if you come home and find an attempt in process. How to warm them up as soon as possible, which I'm sure someone will post how to, or if you search hibernation on this forum you'll find tons of articles on it.

Hope this helps

How long do hedgehogs take to attempt Hibernation?

Alright, so, I'm sort-of a "Paranoid Parrot". How long does it take for your hedgehog to start hibernation? Like, I'm terrified that, say, what if one day, I'm at work/school all day, so are my dad and sister, and nobody is home. What happens if the power went out, due to the weather or something? The heat and light would be shut off in my room, so it would get dark and cold. How long would it take before my hedgie would think to attempt hibernation? If everybody was gone, there would be no way of knowing if the power was out at home or not What if I were to get home and find it too late? D':
Sorry for being so paranoid, but this has been worrying me for a while. I'll be getting my hedgie in the spring, so I want to be fully prepared. Thank you for your time!
