Re: First Time Owner!

Thank you all for your replies!

Things have been great! I have officially have him for 9 days and he is letting me pick him up from his cage with my hands!
He has been sleeping in my t-shirts every night and now he won't give them up haha. I am posting my first picture of Owen He is very much an explorer. He's a unique little guy, and I have definitely grown to love him very much already.[attachment=0:1w1np69m]owen.jpg[/attachment:1w1np69m]

I used the t-shirt idea I've seen suggested many times, wear one to bed a few times and put it in the cage then I traded it out every couple of days. This worked really well for me, Thistle got comfortable with me within the first week. Now 2 months later she is a sweet cuddle-bug and I never get to see her in a ball anymore when I'm around. Good luck!

Re: First Time Owner!

Congrats on your new hedgie! Are you a nervous wreck like I was?

It is totally normal that he's a little afraid of you. The hedgie bag is a great idea. You can also pick him up with folded up fleece to get him used to being held out of the bag. Mustache was as scared of me as I was of him when I first got him, so I did the fleece thing and it's been 2ish weeks and he's perfectly fine with being picked up now.

As for him rolling in the litter, Stache did that too. I ended up taking the litterbox out because he would play in it and I was terrified he would eat it.

Re: First Time Owner!

First of all congrats!!! Secondly all first time owners should read this book in it's entirety viewtopic.php?f=2&t=18325! Just click on the link and download the free PDF. Just let him get used to you he should warm up to you. Handling him in a bag is a great idea at first. Also you could try putting a shirt inside his cage that you have worn to bed for a couple of nights. Put it where he likes to sleep so he will associate your smell with comfort. It's always a good idea to swap out shirts, so after a few days you can a have another shirt ready to replace it with. Unfortunately some hedgies never get the whole litter training thing so don't be discouraged if he plays in it instead of using the bathroom in it. Most hedgies poop in their wheel anyway. Have fun with your little guy. Don't forget to post pictures of your baby!!!

First Time Owner!

Hello! I just got my first hedge yesterday! His name is Owen and I absolutely adore him. I have read so many things on websites and blogs, but I am very happy to be apart of a community of first hand experience.

I have a couple of questions. I read a lot about letting them adjust to their new home. I have tried to hold him today, since I did last night when I first got him, and he hasn't been too accepting of that today. He was cuddled in his bag which i placed on my chest while laying down then in bed beside me, he started to sniff around but still wasn't okay with me trying to hold him. Is this normal?

I have been trying to just let him smell me hands and see that I won't hurt him and that seems to be working, he is becoming more brave and less "flinch-y"

Also, I am introducing a litter box to him, so far he seems to have more fun rolling all in it and throwing it around than actually using it. Has anyone else had this experience? I am using a dust free sand type of cat littler. It is white and blue and doesn't really look like cat littler, but more like a big sand. He LOOOOOOVES to play in it, so i think it will get more use as a sand box than a bathroom haha.

Any advice on handling would be great appreciated. I am happy to be apart of this forum.
