Re: New Picky Hedgehog

Thanks for the great feedback everyone!

I'll take it slowly with introducing treats. I wasn't so much trying to do it to spoil him so much as I'd like him to eat more than he has been. I guess I'm somewhat impatient and it pains me to think that he's starving himself b/c he's stressed from his new environment.

Yea, I have been mixing in some of the pretty pets w/ the innova, but not by much. My previous hog loved it as she had been raised on it (she was my first and I got her from a pet store, the new guy is from a local exotic breeder). I'll stick to the higher quality stuff, thankfully he hasnt taken to the pretty pets.

I contacted the breeder and got the exact mix that she had him on, and I've weighed it out. Here's hoping the bowl is lighter in the morning.

Oh, and here are some pics of Griswold (crummy quality, but I havent uploaded the ones from my Nikon yet):

Wait, are you mixing in commercial hedgehog food in with the Innova? If so, you will probably want to take that out completely. Commercial hedgehog foods like Pretty Pets, Sunseed Vita Exotics, or Spikes Delight are pretty much junk. Stick to the high quality cat food, like the Innova and the Blue Buffalo.

Congrats on your new baby.
Well first just take it slow with introducing new foods. That may be the problem. Only one new food a week. And if you changed the cat food he was on at the breeders change it back for now then slowly introduce and take away the foods you want.
Hedgehogs have very sensitive stomachs.

New Picky Hedgehog

Hey All,

Long-time lurker, first-time poster. My girlfriend and I got a new hedgehog this past Saturday. We named him Griswold and he's such a sweet little guy, very social, and doesn't necessarily burrow or hide as much as hedgehogs previous. However, because of that fact we're kinda worried about his appetite (or lack thereof). He's a tubby dude and so in our minds he should probably be eating more than he is. Granted, he's in a new home and so there's probably some stress on him even though he's so mellow, but I was just wondering if anyone else has had prior experience with a hedgehog taking a while to come around to eating anything and how long.

Thus far we've tried pea-flavored baby food (we'll probably try some mango that we got for him tonight), mealworms, hedgehog/innova mix food as well as just the innova, and all he's eaten is a minimal amount of the cat food and water. I'm in contact with the breeder and she said she gave him blue buffalo and iams(ugh), so if he continues to be picky we'll buy some and wean him onto what we have if we can.

Thanks in advance for any advice or insight anyone has to offer. It's great to finally join the HHC forums!
