Re: skin issues! help!!!

Its a good thought but, if you give your hedgie to much it could upset her stomach, veggie/ olive oil works wonders! rose has mites and it really helps, an aveno oatmeal bath helps a bit as well good luck

Re: skin issues! help!!!

Lucky to find this thread because this is something I have been curious about. Medge's home is stationed primarily in the basement and I often wonder how that affects her hedgehog skin. She is having skin problems just like yours. It is quite flaky underneath and her dry skin is really obvious and makes me feel bad for her. In another thread, I saw that oatmeal bath was recommended. Will you tell me about how the oatmeal bath worked out if you have used it? I haven't noticed any quill loss if that makes a difference. I think I am going to find a humidifier since it sounds like you are all happy with the results. Maybe surprising but I have never owned one so I need help with the different kinds and settings. Is this kind of
Air bear Humidifier the kind that would be suitable for Medge in the basement?

Re: skin issues! help!!!

Yeah I'm gonna call mills vet on monday and make an appointment to get her checked for mites...also my sister told me last night that in class she learned that hedgies often die of uterine cancer so that I should look into getting her fixed...my sisters rabbit had that kind of cancer and so she had to get the surgery so now she has a couple more years of life to look forward too...so I'm going to get a price on the surgery when I go to the vets also and see what he thinks...

I have booster (I think it's palm oil) and use a humidifier. I have used flax and it worked but I have had better results with the booster.

Re: skin issues! help!!!

My baby girl has mites and her skin is SUPER dry from it, I've put a drop(s) of flaxseed oil and it seems to help.

Re: skin issues! help!!!

Has anyone suggested flaxseed oil to you yet? I'm no expert yet, but I've been told to give hedgies a couple drops of flaxseed oil in their food and on their backs to help with dry skin.

Re: skin issues! help!!!

Huh, never heard of that suggestion before. I've always seen yogurt mentioned as a way to help upset stomachs/GI tracts. Yogurt is fine to give as a treat though, I'm just not sure how often. I'd be very interested to hear whether it helps her skin or not, if you do end up trying it. I'm sure someone else will come by soon and be able to recommend an amount.
