Brooke Lancelot | Thank you for the notice, I'll definitely get one when I get the cage! |

Ria | Just be careful with a vivararium u really need a thermostat to control the che otherwise it will get too hot in there |

The CHE didn't get to a higher temperature, and the heat escaped from the wires from the cage. Still don't have a thermostat, since the CHE doesn't get high, and the heat escapes, so, plan B, I'm getting a vivarium, the glass cages you use for reptiles. There's this pretty decent sized one at our local reptile pet shop, and I'm saving money to buy it. It'll make the heating alot easier and will offer Igor more space than his current cage |

Mecki | @Brooke, I thought you got a CHE and thermostat all hooked up? How did it drop that low? |

Its winter here too, I'm in bloem, so South Africa too. It went below 14°C in my hog's cage and he didn't go into hibernation. Which I find scary and strange, because they aren't suppose to, ya know, be active below 20°C. |

nikki | You can use a space heater for the cage but it means the whole room is going to be the same temp as the cage. When I was breeding hedgehogs I used a space heater in my hedgehog room as it was easier and cheaper than a bunch of CHE's. Just make sure to keep the temperature probe in the cage and use a thermometer to track the temperature. |

I agree having the che on the top won't do anything because its so far away and theres so many gaps because the front is wired you really need it inside but it cant hang any lowers than the third floor. If we are putting a che there, if u can take out the ramp to the third floor that would mean theres 100% no way of getting up there - just ensures the safety of not reaching the che really. Also gives a little more space on the second floor. Rather than blankets you might want something like tinfoil over the top of the bars just to keep anything off the light fixtures to save the fire hazard. Also you could try coving some of the wire at the front so that theres less places for the heat to escape, but still a lot of airflow |

Those photos show much more. The first posted photo didn't show the open front. Nice looking cage. Hmmm... with the whole front being wire, heat can escape more easily. Here are a couple thoughts I had from seeing your photo. First, please do be careful having a blanket draped over the light fixtures. That could cause a fire hazard. I don't think the blankets should be touching the fixtures themselves. If the 3rd level is not in use, then perhaps you can hang a CHE inside the cage so that the bottom most part of the CHE is even with the 3rd level. (Otherwise you could try putting it on the cage top, but I don't know if it would be as effective at that distance.) If you are still having cold temps, I'd suggest not waiting the 4 weeks for the thermostat. I'd suggest going to a reptile store and getting the thermostat and connecting it to a CHE. That way the temp can be regulated and consistent. You set it for the preferred temperature and it will come on as needed and go off when it reaches the desired temp. |

This is my setup. I have two lights that turn on at 6h00am and off at 8h00pm. I have two blankets on the cage on top of each other. I have moved it i BIT farther from the window. Where do I put the CHE bulb? The cage is 76cm high and 110cm wide(by the way.... I blocked off the third floor and she has NEVER fell of the second, so don't worry). Will the CHE bulb even reach Lily (hedgehog)? I'll figure out something, just tell me how far away it should be from Lily. Sent from my EML-L09 using Tapatalk ![]() ![]() |

Ria | No because a space heater will heat the whole room and may not heat the cage, to ensure the cage is getting the heat you'll want a che set up on the cage, so for your cage you'd want a dome, bulb and thermostat. |
