Askeptosaurus Always support them from underneath, never grab them. If mine are in a ball I always scoop under with my dominant hand while rolling them onto it with my non-dominant hand. They'll take time to get used to you, don't take it personally when they huff and puff. They are skittish prey animals after all.

Cherrymik I would advise you to get close to him by singing to him or just by calling his name and wait until he reacts to it. So he knows you are there. Then pick him (I never used a blanket, I thought it is better if she feels my hands without any layer). While picking him up don't hesitate or be scared, be gentle and sure.
Wait until he calms down on your lap. You can give him his fav food to make him calm or if he is already calm as a reward. Just be careful not to over feed him ^^

And another important tip is putting your t shirt in his cage, at a place where he sleeps, for him to know how you smell.

I hope this helps.

Luna is perfect I got my hedgehog a week ago and I would advise you to pick him or her up with a blanket and then put them on your lap be completely still until their quills go down. Hope this helps

Kalandra First and foremost you must pick him up even if he spikes up.

1. Be confident when you approach him. If you are jittery/scared he will know that and react accordingly.
2. Place your hands to each side of the hedgehog and gently scoop him up. It will hurt, but not as much.
3. Use a soft blanket to help scoop/protect your hands.

You need to build your confidence that you can handle him so that he builds his confidence that he can trust you to pick him up safely.
