latte.the.hedgehog This is an update for everyone that helped me with Pumpkin's care. He is doing SO much better. The URI stuck around for almost a solid 2 months. According to the vet, some hedgies heal quickly and some take longer. Thanks to a tip from yukidama's mama, I added his liquid baytril to his food instead of trying to feed it directly. He started improving greatly after that. We followed the vet's directions and finally stopped the meds 4 days ago. He's doing great; eating and wheeling up a storm. I really don't think I could have healed him without you guys! Thank you!

belties Have you checked for drafts in his pen. Is it a plastic bin or wire sided. Is the air movement in the room blowing across the pen or down into it.Small drafts can cause ongoing health issues in some animals. You may not feel a draft but they might. Try using a candle flame to check for air currents at his level. Hope he gets better

latte.the.hedgehog Any other ideas for what I can do? There are only 2 vets in my prefecture that will see hedgehogs. The one I've taken him to (4 times in the past month) just wants me to continue the baytril (liquid form). The other one I took him to prescribed amoxicillin (powdered form) but he didn't really seem to know what he was doing. Both hedgie and I are exhausted over this illness.

latte.the.hedgehog White vinegar is very hard to find in Japan, but I did manage to find it at a foreign food store. I will wash their bedding using baby laundry detergent and an extra rinse with the white vinegar.

Raising the temp seems to have helped a great deal. He's eating like crazy, which I'm very happy about. The problem is that he's still sneezing and just generally sounds stuffed up.

I have an air purifier going 24/7, just washed his bedding using the above method and will use it tonight, I don't use lotions or perfumes in the room where the hedgies live. I'm not sure what else I can do?

Askeptosaurus I'm no expert on the vinegar method but I notice that everyone recommended white distilled vinegar and not apple cider vinegar which can have other things in it and isn't as pure as white distilled. Just an observation.

Yukidama's mama Re the benebac. You can get it on amazon.jp I got it with prime (next day delivery). Also rakuten.jp sells it if you don't have prime for Japan and that'll take just a couple days delivery. I can send you the links for either, just let me know. it will definitely help with his green poop situation.

In case it is allergies, it might be worth investing in an air purifier for the room (you'll benefit from it too ^^) ~I'm happy with the one I purchased earlier this year.

Continue the medicine as per the vet instructions.

Hoping he improves soon! ♡

latte.the.hedgehog I washed his bedding and did a second rinse with apple cider vinegar. It definitely took the pee smell out but he's still sneezing up a storm. The doctor told me to continue the baytril until the bottle is empty and call if he's still sneezing. The bottle is almost empty, I'd guess we have 5 days left or so.

His poo is green and tar-like. I ordered benebac and carnivore care a week ago but as I live in Japan, it takes time. There was no expedited shipping option, and Amazon estimates that it'll be another week before they get here.

Is there anything I can do to help him out? He's a very picky eater but I was thinking about trying some pumpkin puree. Any thoughts? This URI has us both exhausted.

Yukidama's mama Hmm is there any other vets to get a second opinion?

Just monitor him closely and keep taking the medicine unless you go to another vets and get new instructions.

Also try rewashing his bedding in hot water, I soak them in a washing bowl in hot water and detergent then put in the washing machine to rinse out (no more detergent). Do you have white distilled vinegar? I recommend buying some and using it in the rinse water to help get residue detergent off. Also use it in a spray woth water 1:1 to clean his cage and wheel etc.

Hoping he gets better soon

latte.the.hedgehog I forgot to mention that I took a look at Volcano View Hedgehogs website and found some cat food from Amazon Japan: Natural Balance Indoor Ultra Chicken and Salmon. Hopefully he and Latte take a fancy to it. Thank you for your help!

latte.the.hedgehog Well I drove 40 minutes each way to be told: "Just keep doing what you're doing." Oh well, at least it was cheap (less than 2000 yen). The vet doesn't think it's pneumonia and he's pleased with Pumpkin's condition. I'm not though. Just when I thought he was over his URI, it came back with a vengeance. He wants me to continue the medicine for another week, which would make it 23 days total.

Supposedly this guy is the hedgehog expert in the area. Since I live in Kumamoto, I'm sure our vets pale in comparison to Tokyo. I've ordered benebac and Carnivore Care to try and keep his appetite and weight up. I'm so worried about him. I was supposed to work this weekend at an event, but I cancelled so I could take care of him.
