Losing weird quills

My hedgehog, Oki, has been quilling for the past couple weeks. It started a few days after I got him, when he was around 2 months old. At first he was losing what were clearly baby quills: smaller, thinner, with the bulb on the end and everything.

Recently (just in the past two days) he's started losing larger quills as well. These quills look like the color has been drained out of them somehow. Sometimes the bases almost seem broken off.

He doesn't seem to be in any pain or discomfort. He gets dry skin every so often, but I've been putting coconut oil in his bath (which he gets once every three weeks or so) and that's cleared up the flaky ears. I can't see any sign of mites. Does anyone have any idea what this could be?
