I just got back from the vet with Gretta and she is doing wonderfully! Her nose has cleared up (the vet thought it must have been an allergy to something). The vet said her skin and ears are healthy, her teeth are good, and overall she is in good health! The vet had a bit of a hard time listening to her chest, but from what she did hear, she said it was normal. Her weight is average, but a little of the chubby side (but she is super active so I'm not really worried about it). I'm so relieved! Thank you everyone for your advice. It is much appreciated. |

Thank you both. Once again I've learned something new- I had no idea hedgies could have allergies! Gretta has 2 spots in her cage where she prefers to sleep. I never know where she's going to end up in the morning, so she must have her preference depending on how she's feeling. She is still eating, drinking, and playing. I haven't heard her sneeze. I'll keep a close eye on her. Thank you both so much. |

Lilysmommy | For other signs to watch for that may indicate a URI getting worse, look for sneezing, going off her food, lethargy, and noisy breathing (as if she has fluid in her lungs). If you see any of that, I agree with bumping the vet visit up to an emergency if possible, since URIs can quickly turn into pneumonia. I would also guess allergies though, if she just has a runny nose and no sneezing. Hopefully that's all it is! |

peace.love.meeko | I feel helpless when my babies have issues too. I feel for you having to wait that long too. I hope it doesn't get too serious. My little lady has had some allergies lately (almost everyone in the house has), with a runny nose, but acting her usual self. My suggestion would be to make sure she can stay warm just in case it's a cold or something so she has the option of being extra warm or going to a cooler spot if she wants. I will be hoping for the best for you and your little hedgie. Take care & keep us posted. |

I called the only 2 vet offices within a 45 minute drive from me and the earliest appointment I can get from a vet in my town is in a week. I would have to wait until July 4th to get her in to see a vet that specializes in hedgehogs. Will a week be too long to wait? Obviously if she stops eating or drinking I'll be calling back and bringing her in on an emergency basis if I have to. I've dealt with mites, ringworm, bone infections, tumours, and wobbly hedgehog syndrome, but not a runny nose. Is there anything else I should be monitoring while I wait to get her in? Sorry- I know I'm stressing, but I hate when my hedgehogs get sick because I don't know what they need and I feel helpless because they can't tell me what's wrong. ![]() |

It's possibly allergies but it would be good to get her checked out. ![]() |

Could be an URI, I'd take her to the vet for a check-up if I were you esp if she's acting different from her usual self. ![]() |

Not sure what is wrong I got Gretta in December and she is aprox 2 years old. She has never had any health concerns in the past. She eats well (although she is picky about trying new things) and loves running on her wheel. Over the past few days I've noticed that her nose has been runny. She isn't sneezing at all. But when I pick her up, there is a noticeable amount of clear fluid from her nose on my hand. I did check to make sure she wasn't drooling- it was definitely from her nose. Also, she has been acting different. It's nothing I can really put my finger on, but she is just a bit off from her usual self. There have been no changes in her routine or food. I've never had a hedgehog with a super runny nose before. I don't know what is wrong with her (or if anything is actually wrong), but I was wondering if anybody had any ideas? |
