Re: My turn for cage heating help? Yay! It's totally stable between 74 and 77 degrees.  My furnace pilot went out last night and the house temp got down to about 64 before the cooler temp woke us up. The hedgie habby didn't get lower than 70, so I think we're good. And I let the landlord know asap that the furnace needs attention, he's already in the basement getting it fixed up. I do have hand warmers and a snuggle safe heat pad for emergencies though

Re: My turn for cage heating help? I finally got the whole thing stable at about 76. I did still have to use some blankets around the outside though because my house is so drafty.

Re: My turn for cage heating help? Ok, the 10" lamp, with the flatter style, arrived today and I got it hooked up right away. I can already tell it's working better because within about 20 minutes, it was 2 degrees warmer on the outer edge of the cage than it was in the rest of my home. It's 70 in my house and the temp in there is 73 and rising. I also got a zoo med digital thermometer since the one I was using was my digital kitchen thermometer. Thanks again for your help. I think this forum is really useful, but definitely only if I double check on my own end! I thought the lamp I had WAS a 10". :P Oh well, now I just need to figure out what I want to do with this other lamp. Ordering from Amazon is way cheaper than the pet shop but not easy for returns. haha! |

Re: My turn for cage heating help? Thank you! I measured it and it's an 8.5" so I'll check out Amazon and see if I can find a 10" and maybe a 100 watt bulb since I'll have 2 lamps then. |

The dome looks too narrow to me...What size is it? 10" domes are the best for spreading heat out more evenly, so if you have a smaller one, you may want to exchange it and see if the larger one helps even out the temperature. As you said, it might also help to put some blankets or covering around the sides of the cage to help hold the heat in more. If you're still having trouble even with that, it may end up working better to get a second lamp & CHE, one on each side of the enclosure, to help heat it more evenly. You may only need 100 watt CHEs if you do that too. On the plus side, glad you're checking all of this out before you get your hedgie! Gives you a bit of time to get things settled before he/she is in there. Good luck!

My turn for cage heating help? Hi, Everyone! So, I'm brand new to the forums. My baby hedgie hasn't joined our family yet. I cannot wait to bring him or her home. The litter is only a few weeks old right now. I'm trying to get everything all set before we bring the hoglet home. I have a 2 by 3 C&C cage and I got a 150 watt CHE for it. We usually keep our house around 69 degrees (f). The problem is that the CHE is only heating a portion of the enclosure. Using a digital thermometer I found that: the section it's over gets to about 82, while inside the igloo is about 72 and further out to the wheel and the food dishes is only 70-71. I can turn the heat up in my house a couple of degrees, but I just don't see getting the enclosure to a cozy 75 all over. Any thoughts on how to get that heat circulating? Should I maybe make a 'skirt' to go around the outside to help hold some heat in? Or maybe the dome on the lamp is too narrow?
